At Bashas’ Family of Stores (the family-owned grocer that operates Food City, AJ’s Fine Foods, Sportsman’s Wine & Spirits, Ike’s Farmers Market, Eddie’s Country Store and both Bashas’ and Bashas’ Diné supermarkets), we’ve been working for more than three decades to reduce our impact on the environment. In 1970, we were the first grocer in Arizona to install balers in our stores so that we could recycle cardboard. Today, we recycle more than 21,000 tons of cardboard annually.

Every year, we recycle 516 tons of material, including plastic bags, shopping carts, baking racks, wood pallets, plastic bottles, paper and magazines, plastic containers and shrink wrap. So far this year, we’ve recycled nearly 260 tons of plastic.

Arizona is our home – we work here, we live here and we play here. That’s why we’re a proud partner of Arizona’s Bag Central Station program. As a local grocer, we believe it’s important to work together for a cleaner Arizona – for the many families who live here today, and for the many more who will tomorrow.

Albertsons has a long and proud history of environmental stewardship. We have been involved in recycling since 1994. For years we have proactively worked to reduce the consumption of plastics in our operation and recycled what plastics we do consume. Last year alone, Albertsons recycled over 1.7 million pounds of plastic that would have ended up in landfills. Reducing plastic bag consumption and helping to eliminate plastics from the waste stream cannot be accomplished by Albertsons alone. So we’ve launched an aggressive, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” customer education campaign in our stores to make this issue top of mind for our shoppers. Currently, our stores carry plastic and paper bags to serve our customers, as well as REUSABLE BAGS to help reduce the impact that plastic bags have on our environment.

Safeway is one of the top retail purchasers of wind energy. We buy enough wind energy to power all of our fuel stations and all of our stores in San Francisco, CA, Boulder, CO, and our Pleasanton corporate offices. Safeway ranks as the 5th largest retail purchaser of renewable power, and we are the first retailer and grocer to join both the Chicago Climate Exchange and the California Climate Action registry. Safeway is reducing energy consumption by designing more efficient stores and using new technology, like no-heat freezer doors, to reduce electricity use.Safeway has long been a leader in recycling, and last year we recycled more than 500,000 tons of cardboard, plastics and compostable material.

Sprouts Farmers Market currently has a total of 25 stores located in Arizona, Texas, California and soon to be Colorado. We have a plastic bag recycling unit in each of our store for customers to return their used plastic bags. For every 100 cases of plastic bags that we buy, we recycle approximately 15 cases. This number is up 5% and continues to grow. Our corporate office in Phoenix, Arizona recycles all plastic water bottles and paper products used.

Sunflower Farmers Markets is dedicated to building a sustainable future. From our green buildings to our organic product selection, we strive to remain on the forefront of environmental concerns. We’ve changed our plastic shopping bags to 98% recycled materials, and we provide incentives for our customers who bring back and reuse their own bag. In addition, we’ve implemented plastic bag recycling stations at all stores. We also carry a variety of reusable shopping bags, for as little as .99. As we continue to grow, Sunflower Farmers Markets will remain devoted to preserving our natural resources for generations to come. At Wal-Mart, being an efficient and profitable business and being a good steward of the environment are goals that can work together. Our environmental goals at Wal-Mart are simple and straightforward: To be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy; to create zero waste; and to sell products that sustain our resources and the environment. Last year, we recycled 2.8 million tons of cardboard, 9,416 tons of plastic, 262 million aluminum cans, glass containers and plastic bottles and 49 million disposable cameras.

Westcor shopping centers in Phoenix and throughout Arizona enthusiastically support recycling of plastic bags. We have created an educational piece that was distributed to all of our retailers that informed them of Bag Central Station collection locations, the website and the importance for all of us to recycle our plastic bags.
